Artist Nuts & Bolts (5 Sessions)

What does it actually mean to have a professional artistic practice, and how do you build one?

Professional practice lives at the intersection of creative vision and practical responsibility, yet most artists are expected to navigate without formal training or support. We produce projects, make logistical decisions, communicate with presenters and students, manage timelines, promote our work, and navigate systems rarely taught alongside artistic training.

Artist Nuts & Bolts is a practical, artist-centered workshop series that demystifies professional practice and equips artists with tools and skills needed to move work from the studio into the professional world with intention and sustainability.

Rather than separating the artistic from the administrative, the series treats both as essential parts of the same framework. Participants learn how to move from an idea, whether a project, a class, or a new initiative, into action through clear steps, real-world frameworks, and shared problem-solving.

Key Features:

  • Start with the “why”: Clarify your motivations for professional work and define what professional practice means for you as well as your community.
  • Real-world frameworks: Learn the essential processes behind creating projects, launching offerings, and teaching classes.
  • Step-by-step pathways: Break down ideas into actionable next steps, from concept to execution.
  • Scenario-based learning: Work through real-life artistic and administrative situations faced by working artists.
  • Transferable tools: Establish practical systems you can apply across performances, residencies, teaching, and independent projects.
  • Integrated practice: Treat artistic vision and administrative reality as interconnected parts of professional practice.
