Residency Intensive

Cuadro Immersion

Flamenco thrives in the moment, emerging from the interplay of dancer, singer, guitarist, and palmas. The Cuadro Immersion invites artists to expand their capacity while refining compás, cueing, and collective intuition inside the semi-improvised tablao framework.

This residency is designed for artists who have an established practice or work actively in flamenco and who wish to strengthen their ability to interact, improvise, and communicate in live settings. Together we explore how to balance protagonism and support, to adapt material in the moment, and to bring awareness, precision, and freedom into group performance.

Through daily tablao simulations, role-based sessions, personalized coaching, and ensemble work, you will deepen your understanding of how a cuadro breathes, how decisions are shared, and how artistry emerges through playful interaction.

The full Cuadro Immersion cycle, taking place from March to August 2026, includes three phases (see Trajectory and Timeline section below) designed to offer a rich, transformative experience within a set timeframe.

  • Strengthen improvisational reflexes and deepen your compás through daily practice sessions.
  • Develop role-specific skills that strengthen your contribution to the cuadro.
  • Explore group dynamics as you practice listening, cueing, and shifting leadership.
  • Take part in daily tablao simulations to build confidence and stage presence.
  • Receive individualized coaching and guidance to adapt your material to any flamenco setting.
  • Collaborate with Creative Immersion artists to expand your artistic range and experience.
  • Join a supportive artistic community, where every participant contributes to the live exchange of flamenco.
  • Have begun to develop or already possess personal material within these forms that you can easily draw from and execute:
    • For dancers, this includes marcajes, llamadas, cierres, and footwork passages.
    • For guitarists, it includes compás variations, chord progressions, and short falsetas across several palos.
    • For singers, it includes letras, salidas, coletillas, and estribillos suited for live interaction in a cuadro.
  • Wish to navigate traditional structures and musical language without relying on set choreography.
  • Demonstrate an emerging awareness of the central role of cante, understanding its phrasing, internal logic, and real-time flow, and how to listen, respond, and adapt as it unfolds.
  • Can sustain steady compás and clear communication in live settings, responding to or initiating cues, changes, and dynamics within the group.
  • Have experience sharing space and responsibility with other artists, understanding that flamenco performance depends on mutual interactivity rather than individual display.
  • Are open to adapting your material in real time, adjusting tempo, structure, or intensity according to the group’s collective flow.
  • Show curiosity for the broader language of flamenco beyond your own role, and value learning through direct interaction with cante, guitar, and dance.
  • Are comfortable giving and receiving constructive feedback in a collaborative learning environment where leadership naturally shifts among artists.
  • Are ready to approach the residency as a laboratory for live communication, not as a rehearsal for fixed choreography or repertoire.
  • Will complete the Flamenco Guide or CFS online as well as participate in group/individual guidance sessions as mandatory preparation before attending the in-person residency.
